The instrument includes a cavity (10) in which a sample (11) can be placed, a first source (12) for introducing microwaves into the cavity, a second source (14) for introducing radiant heat into the cavity, an analytical balance (16) for measuring the weight of a sample, a temperature sensor (20) capable of measuring the temperature of a sample, and a processor (21) in communication with the temperature sensor and each of the first and second sources for controlling the introduction of the microwave and radiant energy in response to the temperatures measured by the temperature sensor to control the sample temperature until the microwaves and the radiant heat dry the sample sufficiently for the processor to determine the volatile content of the sample. |
