[Class 87 (ii)] The part of the cable 2 to be covered is enclosed within two semicircular-section mould strips 1 made of high electrical resistance metal, and electric current is passed through the strips to heat them and thus vulcanize or otherwise heat-treat the rubber, polyvinyl chloride, &c. covering. The strips 1 are secured to recesses in blocks 5 made of asbestos cement or other heat-resisting material, and the blocks are embraced by contact members 8 in the form of metal strips or tapes which are soldered to the flanges 4 of the strips 1. The mould is held closed by spring-loaded clamps 9 having contact members 10 which engage the members 8 and are fed with current through a transformer 12. The mould parts may be held together by binding tapes. The blocks 5 may be omitted.</p> |
