A position of an entity (person) 120 is determined by providing at least one vehicle 140 (e.g. an automatically guided vehicle (AGV)) and determining the position of the vehicles. A sensor 144 on each vehicle 140 determines proximity (e.g. distance from signal strength) information relating to the proximity of the person 120 to the vehicles and hence the position of person 120 using a predictive movement model such as a Kalman filter or particle filter. An occupancy grid is used, with a likelihood (probability) of the person being at each point in the grid being assigned, and a cost of paths between first and second points being determined. A keypad, touch screen, facial recognition, RFID transmitter or other wireless device may be used to indicate proximity. The position, or a predicted future position, so determined may be used to allocate a nearby task to the person. |
