摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compatibly attain the avoidance of preignition and quick start independently of the temperature condition of a spark ignition type multi-cylinder engine when automatically started.SOLUTION: In at least an early stage when automatically starting an engine 1, a valve phase varying mechanism 32 sets a valve closing timing for an intake valve 21, defined at a time of 1 mm lift, to be within 90°CA after an intake bottom dead center. Automatically starting means (an engine controller 100) performs fuel injection and ignition in a plurality of cylinders 11, in sequence, to automatically start the engine. It executes fuel injection in an early stage of an expansion stroke predetermined times starting from first-time fuel injection in the cylinder being in an intake stroke at a time when automatically stopping the engine, and performs ignition after completing the fuel injection.
