The present invention relates to a process for preparing a solid hydroxyalkylamide comprising the steps of: (a) reacting a dimethylester of a C 2 -C 12 dicarboxylic acid with an alkanolamine in the presence of a basic catalyst at a temperature in the range between 80°C and 100°C until no ester is detected in the reaction mixture; (b) adding only water to the reaction mixture obtained in step (a); and (c) solidifying the product obtained in step (b).
