An electronic device 100 includes a housing 101 and one or more processors 116. At least one proximity sensor component 140 is operable with the one or more processors and includes an infrared signal receiver (220) to receive an infrared emission (601) from an object external to the housing. At least one proximity detector component 141 is also operable with the one or more processors and includes a signal emitter (207) and corresponding signal receiver (213). The one or more processors actuate the at least one proximity detector component when the at least one proximity sensor component receives the infrared emission from the object. The at least one proximity detector component may be in a low power or sleep mode until the at least one proximity sensor component receives the infrared emission from the object. The proximity sensor component may be a passive infrared sensor. The proximity detector component may be an active infrared sensor.
