[Class 38 (v)] In a pneumatically-actuated gas-blast circuitbreaker having a disconnector switch and a plurality of serially-connected power breaking points, the actuating gas supply to each driving piston is throttled until the piston has moved to uncover the main inlet apertures, effecting simultaneous arc interruption at all breaking points. Stacked, coaxial units each consist of fixed and moving contacts 7, 13, insulators 1, 4 and the necessary actuating gear for the contact 13. To' open the circuit-breaker, compressed gas is admitted to insulating pipes 2, through annular chambers 3 and throttling apertures 16 into a filling chamber 15. The piston 18 moves downwards slowly, uncovering the main apertures 17 and then accelerating, and contact 13 subsequently passes the cylindrical insulating nozzle 6 and compressed gas is thus admitted to the arc, flowing through the contact 13, 7 and escaping through gas cooler 5. By decreasing the ratio of volume of filling chamber to cross-sectional area of throttling apertures for the units progressively further away from the common source of compressed gas, the driving pistons for all units are arranged to accelerate simultaneously. |
