摘要 A catheter and introducer needle assembly 200 comprising a catheter hub 204 having an uninterrupted outer surface portion 226, a Luer-connecting feature 228, and a disabling feature 232. The assembly includes an introducer needle 206 disposed in the catheter, a needle shield 210 having a resilient clip 212 adapted to flex between a first and a second position in a plane perpendicular to the introducer needle 206. The resilient clip 212 includes a cantilevered arm 220 with a pawl or finger 222. In the resilient clip's first position, the cantilevered arm 220 is flexed so that the pawl 222 frictionally contacts the catheter hub's outer surface 226 at a position spaced from, but axially aligned with, the disabling feature 232; the pawl 222 thus frictionally retains the needle shield 210 with the catheter hub 204. The normal force applied to the outer surface 226 by the pawl 222 is preferably in the range of 0.4-1.4 N, and a coefficient of friction between the two is in the range 0.25-0.4. In the second position, the pawl 222 no longer frictionally contacts the hub's outer surface 226, thereby permitting the needle shield 210 to be displaced.
