An inductive power transfer winding arrangement 6 or a method of operating such a winding arrangement, comprises: a winding 1 and at least one additional winding 5. The winding 1 may comprise sub-windings 2a, 2b providing at least one figure of eight winding formation. The at least one additional winding 5 may be asymmetric with respect to one or other of the sub-windings 2a, 2b. At least one additional winding 5a 5d may be assigned to each respective sub-winding 2a, 2b with equal mutual coupling arising between the said respective windings and where an additional winding 5a - 5d may be located within its respective sub-winding. All of the windings may be coplanar and may provide a mirror plane symmetrical formation. The power transfer winding arrangement 6 may be used as the primary (transmitting) or secondary (receiving) winding of a power transfer system. The additional windings 5a 5d may be operated independently from the sub-windings 2a, 2b and may be controlled depending on the position and/or orientation of a primary winding arrangement relative to a secondary winding arrangement. The inductive power transfer winding arrangement 6 may be used in a wayside power converter system for electric vehicles. |
