A flywheel apparatus for energy storage and recovery typically includes a housing (1) within which there is a chamber (1a) in which a flywheel (3) on a shaft (4) rotates. The chamber (1a) is evacuated to at or near vacuum pressure, so that air resistance-related energy losses of the flywheel (3) as it rotates are reduced. Maintaining near-vacuum pressure within the chamber (1a) requires an effective seal between the housing (1) and the shaft (4). The effective seal must be maintained despite any relative movement (in particular translational movement) of the flywheel (3) and the housing (1). To this end, the shaft (4) is mounted via a bearing arrangement (2) on a carrier (12, 13) on which is also mounted a sealing arrangement (11). The carrier (12, 13) is mounted on the housing (1) such that the carrier (12, 13), the bearing arrangement (2) and the sealing arrangement (11) move substantially together relative to the housing (1). |
