A method of emissions regulation

Disclosed is a method for regulating emissions of a motor vehicle to achieve a desired level. The method comprises the steps of determining a moving average emissions value for a current vehicle driving conditions, determining a predicted moving average emissions value for future driving conditions and determining a combined moving average emissions value, calculated based on the current and future driving conditions. The method further requires controlling the operation of an engine and/or an exhaust after-treatment system to maintain the combined moving average emissions value at or below a predetermined threshold value, thereby achieving a desired emissions value.
