Removing a surface coating such as wall paint with the aid of a pulsed laser beam uses a directional control of the laser pulses by optical deflection so that the impact zones (I1, I2, I3) are separate or have a minimal overlap. The fluence of each laser beam pulse on the coating layer is estimated beforehand from the nature of the material being removed and the state of the surface, and the energy of the laser beam is regulated accordingly.
