[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXV] In a carbon pile regulator of the type in which the pile compression is increased by electromagnetic action, testing means for checking the correct setting of the pile are provided, comprising spring means adapted to apply a predetermined compression to the pile with the magnet de-energised and means for indicating the setting of the pile under the said compression. Fig. 5 shows one embodiment of the testing means in which a calibrated spring urges a plunger r into engagement with a lever r, Fig. 3, when the cap u of the casing p' in which the spring is mounted, is depressed until the parts r<1> and q are in contact. A compressive force is thus exerted on the pile through the members h and presser ring j connected to the ends e<1>, e<2> of lever e, the force being sufficient to overcome the decompressing spring m. For correcting setting of the pile, a pointer z<1> carried on the arm e<1> should align with the mark i on the frame extension a<3>. The pile may be adjusted by the abutment screw k. In a modification, Fig. 6, the main control spring m is detachably secured to the arm e<2>, being detached for test purposes, the predetermined compressive force then being supplied by a light spring 4. Alternatively the spring 4 may be detachable during normal operation, being used for test purposes only.</p>
