Disclosed are a method for encoding and decoding a video, and an apparatus therefor. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the method for encoding a video determines whether or not a unidirectional motion prediction mode and a bidirectional motion prediction mode are used based on a size of a current prediction unit to be encoded and performs motion prediction and motion compensation with respect to the current prediction unit by using the determined motion prediction mode. The method for encoding a video determines the motion prediction mode of the current prediction unit based on encoding cost of the current prediction unit obtained through the motion prediction and the motion compensation and encodes information of the determined motion prediction mode based on the size of the current prediction unit.
