[Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] Relates to air tubes of the kind described in Specification 456,294, [Group XXXIV], comprising a main rubber tube 12 and an inner, fabric-restrained, safety tube 11 from which air may seep slowly into the tube 12 on deflation of the latter. According to the present invention, the composite tube is inflated through a valve 13 from which a comparatively free passage 21 leads to the tube 12 and a constricted opening 16 in a removable insert 15 leads to the tube 11. As shown in Fig. 1, the passage 21 is formed in a flap 20 on the rubber casing 13a of the metal valve 13 and opens through an aperture 23 in the wall of the tube 11. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the valve is fitted through a rubber sleeve 26 so that the passage in the flap 31 is arranged on the outer face of the tube 11. In this case, the passage 21 is formed by a groove in the flap which is maintained by a removable pliable core 35 during preliminary vulcanization of the tube before the outer tube 12 is assembled. During the vulcanization, the air in the tube 11 is shut off from the lateral port 22 by a removable insert 40 in the valve having an axial bore opening only to the part 16. It is stated that the relative positions of the ports 16, 21 may be reversed. The composite tube may be built-up as described in Specification 464,681, [Group XXXIV']. |
