[Class 78 (ii)] Relates to a rope grip of the kind comprising a pair of movable jaws, one of which is operable by a helical or inclined cam device to effect initial engagement of the jaws with the rope and also to release the jaws when required, and the other of which is operable by a cam or screw device to effect final engagement or tightening of the jaws on the rope. According to the invention the grip is provided with a knock-off device comprising a pair of cams 11a, 14a on the engaging and releasing jaw 8, Fig. 4, and a similar pair 4a, 7a on a knock-off lever 1, Fig. 3, the cams 11a, 14a being arranged at different radii from each other but at the same radii respectively as the cams 4a, 7a and each cam having at least one inclined or helical surface such as 10, all such surfaces subtending equal angles at the pivotal axis of the lever, and each cam having also a bearing surface such as 11 which is arranged normal to the plane of said axis, such surfaces forming a stable seating for the lever when in the engaged position. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the tightening jaw 15 is pivotally mounted at 16 on the engaging and releasing jaw 8 and the knock-off lever 1 is mounted on a bolt 16a with a wing nut 17.
