600,389. Universal joints. SOC. ANON. DES ATELIERS DE SECHERON. Nov. 6, 1945, No. 29569. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a transmission shaft having a universal joint at each end, one joint is an unlubricated elastic coupling and the other comprises a member fitted with driving arms which coact with means integral in rotation with a toothed wheel and revolving in an oil bath. As shown applied to power the driving axle 11, Fig. 1, of an electrically propelled vehicle, a quill transmission shaft 7 drives the axle through a steel strip coupling 10, which may be rubber bushed, and carries arms 5 on its other end engaging, directly or through helical springs, the spokes of a gear 4 meshing the driving pinion 3 of an electric motor 1. The shaft 7 may be supported on enlarged spherical ends of the arms 5 or, as shown, by a rounded collar 13 on a fixed mounting 8 for the gear 4. A casing 9 provides the oil bath. Alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown), a quill axle and solid transmission shaft may be used. Where the motor is arranged longitudinally in the vehicle, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spur gear 4 is replaced by a centrally disposed bevel gear meshing a bevel gear on the motor shaft and secured on a second quill shaft surrounding the first and having at one end a rounded supporting collar and radial driving arms co-operating with the arms 5 as before. In a modification, a gear 41, Fig. 6, is mounted directly on the driving axle and the solid transmission shaft 18 passes through a hollow motor shaft 19, being connected to it at one side of the motor by an elastic coupling (not shown) and co-acting with a driving pinion 3<1> on the other side in the manner of the invention. |
