Condensation products are prepared by causing a mono-olefinic aldehyde, ketone, acid or ester containing the group CH2=C< to act upon a polymeric compound containing alcoholic hydroxyl groups in aqueous solution or emulsion at ordinary or moderately raised temperature and in the presence of an agent of alkaline reaction. Suitable mono-olefinic compounds are acrolein, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl ethyl ketone, acrylic acid, phenyl vinyl ketone, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl formate, vinyl butyrate and vinyl acetate. Suitable polymeric compounds are polyvinyl alcohol and partially esterified or acetalized derivatives thereof, carbohydrates, sugars, cellulose, alkali cellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxy cellulose or albumen. Suitable substances of alkaline reaction are sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate, triethylamine, trimethylamine, pyridine, and tetramethylammonium hydroxide. In examples, (1) polyvinyl alcohol or methyl cellulose is reacted with vinyl methyl ketone or acrolein in the presence of aqueous caustic soda; (5) dextrin or mercerized cellulose is reacted with acrolein or vinyl methyl ketone in the presence of water and alkali. |
