[Class 81 (ii)] A surgical speculum for dilating and distending a cavity has two relatively movable parts, one of which is composed of light transmitting material. The form shown is of the duck bill type a fixed part 1 being of light transmitting material such as methyl methacrylate and being provided with a shank having a sleeve 5 from which a bolt 6 projects to engage in the elongated slot 8 of a bracket 7. The upper end of the bracket is forked and carries screw pivots 10, 11 on which the movable part 12 of the speculum can swing. The degree of separation of the parts 1, 12 can be varied by adjusting the bracket relative to the sleeve 5 and the parts can be held in the open position by manipulation of the screw 14. A lamp bulb 4 is provided in the handle 3 which is screwed to the shank of the fixed part 1. Light from the lamp passes up the shank to the fixed part 1 and is diffused from the etched surfaces 1A. |
