[Class 38 (i)] A plug-and-socket device for connecting together a number of conductors comprises a block of synthetic organic insulating material, such as polythene, moulded round the ends of the conductors and a corresponding number of plugs to which they are soldered, and a corresponding block of insulating material moulded round the second group of conductors and the sockets to which they are connected, screw means being provided to clamp the blocks together. Fig. 4 shows a socket connector consisting of a number of sockets 7 to which the conductors 11 of a cable 2 are soldered. The conductors are insulated from one another and gathered together by a rubber sleeve 12 and then surrounded by the moulded composition block 8 which extends over a metal ferrule 13 surrounding the cable. An upstanding boss 9 is moulded round one of the sockets intended for high voltage use to increase the leakage path. The remaining sockets may be surrounded by recesses 10 to facilitate the application of a tool for closing the sockets if they become loose on the plugs. An insulating tube 15 is provided for the reception of a screw for drawing the plug-and-socket members tightly together and a lug 17 to engage a slot in the plug holder ensures correct registration of the two members. An electrostatic screen for the sockets is provided by metallizing the outer surface of the block 8 down to and over the ferrule 13. The metallized layer may be plated to increase its conductivity. Each socket consists of a short brass rod drilled out at one end to receive a plug and having a recess at the other end into which the conductor 11 is soldered. Flexibility is obtained by two saw-cuts at the socket end and a groove near the middle facilitates bonding of the socket with the plastic material of the block 8. Fig. 9 shows a plug member to fit the socket device shown in Fig. 4. The plugs 25 with their connecting wires 26 are held in an insulating disc 27 and surrounded by a moulded polythene block 24 in which is also embedded a cylindrical metal housing 23. A high voltage plug is surrounded by a recess 28 to receive the boss 9 shown in Fig. 4 and a screwed metal insert 29 is provided to receive the end of the screw passing through the tube 15 of Fig. 4. One of the conductors 26 is secured to the insert 29 for making connection with the metallized screen of the socket holder through the screw. A water-tight joint is made between the plug- and-socket holders when in engagement by washers 31, 34. The plug holder may form the terminal connection of a cable instead of the socket holder shown in Fig. 4.
