[Classes 103 (v) and 103 (vi)] A railway car includes an end sill 11 rigidly connected to a pair of centre sills and either formed of box-section or provided with a parallel abutmentmember 25 rigidly connected to the centre-sills, a draught bar 22 extending through aligned openings in the sills 11 and 25 and having a coupler 62 on its forward end, and a friction draught gear surrounding the rear end of the draught bar. The friction draught gear comprises shoes 41, 42, 43 expandable into engaging with a housing 38 by the combined action of a wedge-member 47 on the draught bar 22 and a spring seat 51 restrained from movement into the housing by springs 48, 49. The housing 38 is reinforced against the outward pressure of the shoes 41, 42, 43 towards the end of the stroke by a bevelled face 67 on a member 54 secured to the draught bar 22 which engages a corresponding bevelled edge 68 on the housing 38. The forward end of the draught bar 22 is of angular section and passes through a corresponding angular opening in the end sill 11 which is reinforced by a plate 19. Plates 14, 140 are secured between the sills 11 and 25 over the draught gear. The springs 48, 49 may be replaced by an annular block of rubber of lozenge-shaped cross-section.
