DATA LOOP DETERMINATION IN A SOFTWARE-DEFINED NETWORK

In some examples, a method includes installing, with a software-defined network (SDN) controller in an SDN containing a plurality of controlled network nodes, a flow rule at a controlled network node to forward a time-to-live (TTL) expired packet to the SDN controller; determining which of the plurality of controlled network nodes are involved with a loop in the SDN by injecting a controlled network node with a series of marker packets having equivalent packet headers as the TTL expired packet; determining that a flow rule used for a marker packet by a given controlled network node does not correspond to a flow rule for the marker packet in an SDN controller database; and adjusting a flow rule on the given controlled network node to remedy the loop.
