[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Altering molecular structure.-A method for simultaneously shaping and work-hardening a blank to form a cup-shaped metal bearing comprises supporting the blank on a matrix and moving it relatively to a hardened polished spherical punch or die by means of fluid in a pressure chamber and restricting the admission of pressure fluid to the pressure chamber. Forging-dies.-A circular blank of a steel alloy comprising 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel is shaped in a matrix 8 by means of a punch comprising a polished steel ball 4 held in a recess at the end of a carrier 5 by a nut 7, the resulting bearing being shown in Fig. 3. Forging-machines.-The press used for the operation preferably comprises a fixed punch, the die being carried by a piston 13 directly operated by pneumatic pressure. The compressed air is supplied through a restricted aperture 22 so that the pressure is built up slowly. |
