An adhesive composition comprises a completely or partially hydrolysed interpolymer of ethylene and a vinyl organic acid ester, e.g. vinyl acetate and propionate, a methylene donating agent and an acidic catalyst. Surfaces coated with the composition may be bonded together by heating at a temperature above 100 DEG C. Alternatively, the composition may be heated at 60 DEG to 80 DEG C., preferably in a solvent, e.g. dioxane, dimethyl formamide, pyridine or a methanol-chloroform mixture, and formed into a film by casting. The film, reinforced, if desired, with paper or cloth, may be interlaid between surfaces such as wood and the assembly heated under pressure. The treatment renders the adhesive relatively insoluble and raises its melting point. Suitable agents are formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, glyoxal, dimethylol urea and its methyl ether, butylated urea-formaldehyde resin, trimethylol-melamine and its methyl ether, N-methylol acetamide, N-methylol formamide, N-alkoxy-methyl nylons, N-alkoxymethyl phthalimides, uron and methylene diurea; phenol-aldehyde condensation products; dioxolane and trioxane, methylol hexamethylene diamine, hexamethylene tetramine and its salts; trimethylene glycol esters; acetals of hydrolysed ethylene/vinyl ester interpolymers and the condensation products of such hydrolysed interpolymers with N-methylol and N-alkoxymethyl compounds described in Specification 575,689. Suitable catalysts are maleic acid, metal halides or the acidic constituents of the wood to be united. Wood flour may be incorporated in the composition. U.S.A. Specification 2,396,209 also is referred to.
|
