The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for editing a video section on a distributed file system, enabling to edit a video section while minimizing transfer of data on the distributed file system in which a compressed video file is divided and stored. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the method comprises the steps of: dividing input video into at least one segment; inserting a segment header including segment location and length information into one or more segments; storing the segments including the segment header in a distributed file system; requesting section editing including the information about the video section to be extracted; extracting a section according to comparison between the video section information and the segment header; and outputting the extracted section. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a video section editing function can be provided on the distributed file system.
