Reaction products of rubber and rubber-like materials are obtained by mixing natural rubber balata or guttapercha or a highly polymerized rubber-like synthetic unsaturated hydrocarbon having a molecular weight above 5000 with at least 15 per cent calculated on the weight of the rubber or rubber-like material of an unsaturated compound which contains the grouping conjugated with one or more >CO radicals and the mixture heated in the absence of a solvent to a temperature of 100-250 DEG C. The unsaturated compound may be maleic acid anhydride, a b -unsaturated aldehydes, acids, acid anhydrides and esters of acetylene-dicarboxylic acid, and acrolein. The products may be soft or hard according to the amount of the unsaturated compound used, and may be vulcanized. The products may be used as a starting material for preparing further substances by reaction with water, alcohol, ammonia and amines. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the reaction product of a butadiene-styrene copolymer with acetylene dicarboxylic dimethyl ester.
