发明名称 Improvements in and relating to nickel-iron and nickel-cadmium electric batteries
摘要 593,643. Accumulators. MILNES, H. R., and MILNES ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. (BINGLEY), Ltd. June 18, 1945, Nos. 15390, 15391 and 32459. [Class 53] Each of the electrodes in an alkaline accumulator comprises two metal sheets which are perforated and formed with grooves or other depressions, the two sheets being arranged back-to-back with the active material on the outer faces and the grooves forming channels between the sheets through which gas can escape. The positive electrodes may be of nickel or nickel-plated steel with active material consisting of nickel hydrate with or without graphite, the negative electrodes being of iron or steel carrying finely-divided iron with or without finely-divided cadmium or oxide of cadmium. The separating sheets may consist of woven glass, nylon or mercerized cotton or of porous rubber &c., the porosity of which is reduced by filling the interstices with an inert substance such as barium sulphate, calcium sulphate, magnesium oxide or aluminium silicate. The edges of the separators are rendered impervious by a filling of pitch, rubber solution, paraffin wax, &c. The electrodes and separators are pressed together in the container by springs or rubber. Electrodes of each polarity are held together and electrically connected by threaded rods which pass through apertures in the electrodes and separators. Fig. 5 shows a part of an electrode comprising a perforated metal plate having grooves formed by ribs 13, 14, 15 and provided with large and small openings 16, 18 to receive the rods 27 shown in Fig. 1. Two plates are pasted with active material 22, 23 and placed back-toback to form an electrode as shown in Fig. 4. The electrodes and separators are assembled to form the completed cell by first arranging in a jig a number of smooth rods corresponding to the rods 27 and threading on the rods an insulated steel plate 20 and a single positive plate 1 and a separator 3. Pairs of negative and positive plates 2, 1 with intervening separators are then stacked on the lowest separator 3. Springs 26 between two top insulated plates 24, 25 subject the stack to compression. The extensions 41, Fig. 5, of plates of like polarity are then connected together and to a source of current and the cell charged in an acid bath. When charging is complete, the rods on which the stack is assembled are removed and replaced by the threaded rods 27 which are of slightly greater diameter than the small holes 18 but smaller than the holes 16. The plates of like polarity thus make contact with one set of rods which are connected together above the plate 25 by a bus-bar, additional pressure being applied to the stack if necessary by nuts 29, 30. The extensions 41 are now cut off and the stack introduced into a casing which is closed and provided with terminals connected to the busbars.
