[Class 80 (ii)] Speed changes are effected by rotating a carrier 12, having an idler 3 in constant mesh with a driving (or driven) gear 2, about that gear to mesh the idler 3 selectively with equal gears 4-6 on layshafts 40, 50, 60, equidistant from and parallel to the driving (or driven) shaft 1, and each carrying also one of a series of different sized gears 7-9 all meshing with a driven (or driving) gear 10. An equal number of reverse ratios may be provided by a separate train (Fig. 2, not shown) of two intermeshing idlers diametrically opposite the idler 3, one in constant mesh with the gear 2 and the other meshable selectively with the gears 4-6. The carrier 12 may, as shown, be a worm-wheel turned by a worm 13 carrying a handle 14, or a directly operated lever, the ratio engaged being-indicated at a fixed window 22 or otherwise and held in by a spring detent (not shown).</p> |
