[Class 80(ii)] Relates to variable-speed gearing comprising a plurality of epicyclic trains in series each train having a member which can be braked or clutched frictionally to a member of an adjacent train and in which different groups of gear ratios may be chosen from the wide range available, the ratios of any particular group selected being made operative by movement in a gate of a normal type of gear change lever. According to the invention the spacing of the gear ratios of one group varies from the spacing of another group. As shown, a gear comprising three epicyclic trains in series has six electromagnets 1a-6a, for actuating the clutches and brakes. Any three of the electromagnets are always energised at one time for any particular gear ratio. The mechanism provides eight gear ratios. For three groups of four ratios, three arms 8, Fig. 3, movable by a lever 7 can each engage any one of three contacts 9 connected to a block of eight solenoids 11. Each solenoid 11 controls the circuits of three electromagnets through triple contact switches. The arms 8 and the solenoid 11 corresponding to the high speed ratio which is thus in each group, are connected at b to the H gate 10 of the speed change lever. Thus four speeds are available by moving the gear lever in the gate 10. A change in the position of the lever 7 will provide a different group of four speeds at the gate 10. In Fig. 3, the numbers in brackets adjacent each solenoid indicate the gear ratio obtained when that solenoid is energised. In a modification the gear change lever may take an additional position adjacent the top gear position to provide an overdrive ratio. The invention may be applied to two or more gear boxes in series. The gear selecting means may be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, electro - hydraulic, electro-pneumatic or mechanical. |
