The present invention relates to printing or impressing of a plurality of symbols on a substrate (50), in particular of sequentially printing or impressing a sequence of markers such as number plates or license plates, for example a batch of car license plates. For this purpose a mechanical press (10) is provided and/or operated such that stamp units (20) comprising press units(40) are adjusted to select a string of symbols. The respective symbols are formed on surfaces (90) of the press units (40). Each constellation of selected press units (40) is defined by a consecutive identifier number (70), which is received and processed by adjusting stamp units (20). Here, stamp units (20) are adjusted by selecting adjacent press unit (40) of the stamp units (20). It follows that only minor adjustments are required, which results in mechanically and system related improvements, such as improved processing speed, lower mechanical wear and reduced power consumption. |
