A vehicle electrical system

An electrical system 2 for a motor vehicle is provided. The electrical system comprises: one or more vehicle batteries 4 configured to provide electric power to one or more vehicle systems; a terminal 12 configured to allow third party or accessory loads 32 and/or third party or auxiliary batteries 34 to be electrically coupled to the electrical system at the terminal; a relay 16 configured to selectively couple the terminal to the vehicle batteries; a controller configured to control the operation of the relay and detect an engine off event. A method of controlling the operation of an electrical system for a motor vehicle is also provided. The operation of the relay may depend on the voltage or the configuration of the third party batteries/loads. The controller may also be configured to detect an engine ignition event. The system is used for the electrical conversion of commercial vehicles to include third party electrical equipment for an alternative application.
