[Class 107] A road-making machine comprises a caterpillar tractor 1 and a hooded frame 2 containing a series of soil cutting and blending tools. The frame pivots about an axis 76 situated at one end of bell-crank levers 38, which are themselves turned about a fixed axis 43 on the tractor by hydraulic jacks 45. The frame 2 can be turned about the axis 76 by hydraulic jacks 74 acting on bell-crank levers 72, and it supports shafts 90, 103, 108 and 109. The shaft 90 carries cutting blades 96 which on rotating at a high speed disintegrate the soil and throw it against impeller blades 107 mounted on the shaft 103. The soil is tossed to and fro between the blades 96 and 107 causing further disintegration until finally the soil is thrown to the mixing blades 112. In passing from the blades 107 to the blades 112 the soil passes through a spray of bonding material issuing from pipes 169, 178. The soil and the bonding material are thoroughly mixed in the intermeshing zone of the blades 112 before the mixture is ejected from the mixing blades on to the ground ready for rolling. The bonding material is supplied from tanks 4 mounted on the tractor by either a centrifugal pump 150 or a positive displacement pump 148, the power for the drives to the tracks, the shafts and the pumps being supplied from an engine 10.</p> |
