The present invention is directed to a method to treat onychomycosis by topically administering a composition which contains hydroxypropyl chitosan as the sole active ingredient and, in particular, by administering a nail topical composition consisting essentially of:
a) hydroxypropyl chitosan,
b) water,
c) at least a lower alkanol.
