[Class 74(ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A thread carrier of a straight bar machine is given a variable traverse by a converter cam 1-2 and a co-operative follower 4 (see Group XXIV) mounted for relative movement to convert a given displacement in one direction into a variable displacement in another direction. In Fig. 2, two converter cams 1-2, 1<1>-2<1>, with followers 4, 4<1> are provided to operate a pair of splicing carriers, both cams being carried by a slipper 15 mounted for reciprocation on a bar 13 by a draw cam 44, lever 46 and a link 49 that can be disengaged from the slide by studs on a control shaft 43. Each cam comprises members 1, 2 conjointly defining a track with offset ends and adjustable individually to vary the length of the inclined portion and the consequential lift of the co-operating follower 4. Movement of the cam members 1, 2 is effected by screw gears 20, 21 and 23, 24, the latter being slidably mounted on shafts 25, 26 that are rotated as desired by cams on the main shaft, and pawl and ratchet mechanism Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) controlled by a pattern chain. The follower 4 of each unit is carried by a bar 5 movable vertically in a fixed bracket 14 and connected by chain and sprocket gearing to a shaft 33 which, on rotation, drives a rack 37, Fig. 4 (not shown) and associated carrier driving finger, the engagement of the finger with its carrier rod being controlled by a cam on the shaft 43. Alternatively, the follower may be connected to a vertical rack gearing with a pinion which gears with a rack on the carrier driving bar. The cam 1<1>-2<1> follower 4<1>, bar 5<1>, shaft 33<1> and associated carrier driving finger are similarly operated. The plating carriers are operated in advance of the slur cock draw by suitably timing the draw cam 44 or by providing the link 49 with an elongated slot for engagement with the pin 50 on the slipper 15. Alternatively, the drive for the slipper may be derived from the slur cock draw through a bar 53, Fig. 10, having an eccentric support for the link 49 together with a rack 58 which, by engagement with stops 59, 60, rotates.the eccentric 57 and advances the link relative to the bar 53. The follower 4 may be reciprocated instead of the cam 1-2, 1<1>-2<1>, in which case the rack bar 5 and immediately associated pinion are moved with it. Specifications 554,443 is referred to. |
