According to principles of present invention system (10) and method for configuring intelligent electronic device (20) (IED) are disclosed. Base configuration (60) for IED (20) and delta configuration (70) are processed by configuration tool (30), as a result of which a target configuration (75) for IED (20) is obtained. Delta configuration (70) reacts to a target operation IED (20), and target operation depends on target configuration (75). Base configuration (60) is defined by parametric default values (VAL) IED (20), and delta configuration (70) is defined by delta-parametric values (VAL).
