An automobile comprises an automatically opening and closing boot lid 2 having a drive mechanism 4 located on a first side of a panel 9, suitably part of a drain channel 6, and a rotatable shaft 7 extending through panel 9 to a second side exposed when the boot lid is open; typically shaft 7 will extend from a dry side to a wet side of a U-shaped drain channel 6. Shaft 7 may comprise splines to engage with grooves in an aperture, and may be supported using a bearing and seal. The rotatable shaft provides drive to an arm 12, 14 which opens and closes the boot lid. The drive mechanism may be a linear actuator, such as a motor-driven spindle drive or pneumatic or hydraulic actuator. A gooseneck hinge 3 may provide further support for lid 2. |
