A catalyst composed of lithium phosphate, used for the preparation of allyl alcohol from propylene oxide, is prepared by the addition of an aqueous solution of a soluble lithium salt, e.g. lithium chloride or nitrate, to an aqueous solution of a tertiary alkali metal phosphate, e.g. trisodium phosphate, and the precipitate, after washing, is dried and crushed, or may be extruded into rods, dried and crushed. The lithium phosphate may be precipitated on an inert supporting material. After use, the catalyst may be regenerated a number of times by passing oxygen, air, oxygen and steam, or air and steam over it at a temperature of 250 DEG to 350 DEG C.ALSO:Allyl alcohol, substantially free from carbonyl compounds, is prepared by passing propylene oxide vapours, if desired, with inert diluents, e.g. water vapour or nitrogen, over a catalyst composed of lithium phosphate, e.g. trilithium phosphate, at an elevated temperature, e.g. at 200 DEG to 300 DEG C., although maximum efficiency is obtained in the range 240 DEG to 255 DEG C. The reaction may be effected in a long narrow tube surrounded with a liquid suitable for the transfer of heat, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene. Unreacted propylene oxide may be recirculated over the catalyst.
|
