PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and low-cost optical sensor capable of distinguishing types of recording paper finely.SOLUTION: An optical sensor comprises multiple measuring systems each of which comprises: a light irradiation system that applies linearly-polarized light in a first polarization direction to a recording medium; a regularly-reflected light detection system that detects light regularly reflected by the recording medium, among the light applied by the light irradiation system; and a diffusely-reflected light detection system that is equipped with an optical element for detecting light diffusely reflected by the recording medium, among the light applied by the light irradiation system, and for transmitting light in a second polarization direction perpendicular to the first polarization direction. |
