[Class 38 (iv)] In an engine-electric locomotive having several t r a c t-i o n motors connectible to the generator in different ways, e.g. series - parallel, full parallel, and with or without the series fields shunted, and in which a load meter is provided for indicating the most efficient load range for each type of connection, the sensitivity of the meter is so varied with each change of connections that the meter scale dimensions for successive connections are adjacent one another and do not overlap. In the system shown, an engine E, having a load regulator L, SS controlled by a manual controller MPC, drives a generator G which supplies pairs of traction motors M1, M4 and M2, M3. A manually-operated transition controller MTC, associated with contactors S, P1, P2, PR, MS1 and MS2, permits the pairs of motors to operate in series with full or weakened fields and in parallel with full or weakened fields, the controllers MTC, MPC being interlocked to prevent movement of the former, when the latter is set for a high power. A shunt IS carrying the current of motor M4 energizes a power meter L1 having a scale divided into sections 1-4, Fig. 2, showing, respectively, the efficient load ranges corresponding to the four motor connections which may be established by controller MTC. To avoid overlapping between sections 2 and 1, and similarly 4 and 3, which would otherwise be necessary in the transition from full field to weakened field operation, the meter is recalibrated by the insertion of a resistor IR when the field shunts R1-R4 are switched in. Division 1 of the scale has a sub-division CR corresponding to maximum continuous load rating of the system and further sub-divisions showing the safe distance the locomotive may be operated intermittently at higher loadings. |
