[Class 40 (vi)] In a timer a first capacitor is charged through a thyratron fed with A.C., a second capacitor being charged at a slower rate to extinguish the thyratron, means responsive to the current in the thyratron establishing the charging and discharging circuits for the capacitors. Upon the A.C. supply 1 being applied to thyratron 6, the valve fires to establish a potential across the relay 7, capacitor 32 smoothing out the ripple due to thyratron 6 extinguishing between positive half cycles. The relay contact 20 reverses, the capacitor 8 charging over resistor 23 and capacitor 9 charging from capacitor 8 over resistor 24. When the extinguishing potential is reached on the control grid, thyratron 6 does not refire during the succeeding positive half cycle, relay 7 releasing to complete a discharge path for capacitor 8 over variable resistor 27. Capacitor 8 continues to discharge through resistor 24 to charge capacitor 9 until the potentials across the two capacitors are equal when they both discharge until the critical grid potential is reached and thyratron 6 refires. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown.), relay 7 actuates a stepping switch to complete a number of circuits, a series of resistors 27 being used, one for each position of the switch.</p>
