PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-purity compound useful as a raw material for heat-resistant aromatic polyester, etc., in subjecting an aromatic nucleus- substituted tertiary alkyl group-containing bisphenol as a raw material to an elimination reaction of tertiary alkyl radical in the presence of a catalyst, by using a specific solvent. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic nucleus-substituted tertiary alkyl group-containing bisphenol is subjected to an elimination reaction of tertiary alkyl radical by using a trialkylbenzene as a solvent in the presence of a catalyst to give the objective compound. 3,3',5,5'-Tetra-tert-butyl-4-4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, etc., may be cited as the aromatic nucleus-substituted tertiary alkyl group-containing bisphenol of the raw material. Benzenesulfonic acid, silica gel, etc., are used as the catalyst. 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene is preferable as the trialkylbenzene of the solvent and the amount of the trialkylbenzene used is preferably 50-300 pts.wt., based on 100 pts.wt. of the raw material. |
