A fuel cell exhaust processing unit 1 for consuming fuel in the exhaust flow of a main fuel cell module 2, having a fuel cell assembly 8 which receives exhaust flow from the anode flow path 6/9 of the main fuel cell module. The fuel cell assembly is electrically connected and configured to consume fuel remaining in the exhaust flow from the main fuel cell module to a predetermined level before the exhaust flow exits the unit. The fuel cell assembly may include multiple cells, and may include a controller to control the flow of current between the anode and cathode of a fuel cell in the assembly. The controller, which may be a passive component, may act on a first cell in response to a measure of the electrical output of a second cell upstream from the first cell. A purge valve 10 may be arranged downstream of the assembly, the valve being configured to actuate based on a signal such as cell electrical output, pressure, or flow of gas. The fuel may be hydrogen, and the exhaust processing unit may be for a vehicle. |
