A shield device, for occluding a tap hole of a furnace, may have an elongate shaft 400 with a shield 403 (extending transverse to the shaft) and retaining means 405. The retaining means 405 can hold at least a portion of the shaft 400 in the tap channel, e.g. using outwardly extending barbs (409, fig 6) to retain the shield device in the tap channel against the force of gravity. The shield 403 may have a circular disc and/or a frusto-conical plate, which may tilt and have limited movement along the shaft (figs 9/10). The shield device can be loaded onto a robotic placement machine (figs 7/8) and inserted into the tap channel from inside the converter. The shield device may melt when in contact with molten metal, unblocking the tap hole. A shield device may have a deformable plug 2302 which blocks the tap hole when a heat expandable material 2309 (e.g. heat activated expanding graphite) pushes on deformable material 2306 (e.g. clay), expanding it out radially (figure 23). A telescopic piston 2307, 2308 may house the graphite, urging upper and lower plates 2304, 2305 towards each other to compress the clay, blocking the hole. |
