Synthetic rubbers are softened by incorporating a substance having the general formula <FORM:0606081/IV(a)/1> (Aromatic) -S-S- (Aromatic) <FORM:0606081/IV(a)/2> , where R is an alkyl, aralkyl or alicyclic radical, and the nitrogen atoms are in the ortho position to the sulphur atoms. R may be methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, allyl, butyl, isobutyl, sec.-butyl, amyl, hexyl, heptyl, dodecyl, betachloro ethyl, betaethoxy ethyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenethyl and naphthyl methyl. The aromatic nucleus may be of the benzene, naphthylene or biphenyl series and may be further substituted by alkyl, aryl, halogen, alkoxy, aryloxy, nitro, cyano, carbalkoxy and acyl groups. The preferred compounds are 2,21-dithio-bis-(methyl carbanilate) and the corresponding ethyl and iso-propyl derivatives. From 0.5 to 5.0 per cent of the softener is normally added to the rubber. The synthetic rubbers may be polymers of butadiene-1,3, methyl-2-butadiene-1,3, chloroprene, piperylene, and 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene-1,3; and copolymers of these substances with styrene, vinyl naphthalene, a -methylene carboxylic acids, their esters, nitriles and amides such as acrylic acid, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and methacrylamide; isobutylene; methyl vinyl ether; methyl vinyl ketone and vinylidene chloride. Sulphur, zinc oxide, accelerators, antioxidants, fillers, pigments and vulcanizing agents may also be added.ALSO:Natural rubber and synthetic rubbers are softened by incorporating a substance having the general formula <FORM:0606081/V/1> (Aromatic) -S-S-(Aromatic) <FORM:0606081/V/2> where R is an alkyl, aralkyl or alicyclic radical, and the nitrogen atoms are in the ortho position to the sulphur atoms.
