A heat exchanger to transfer heat between a first fluid and a second fluid comprising a plurality of components; the heat exchanger comprising a separator 42 to at least partially separate the plurality of components of the second fluid into a first stream and a second stream. The first fluid may flow through at least one conduit and the second fluid may flow through channels comprising at least one wide flow channel 32 for the first stream and a plurality of narrow channels 34 for the second stream. The second fluid may comprise a two phase flow containing solid particulates in liquid suspension, or two immiscible liquids with different densities. The first stream may have a higher viscosity than the second stream. The separator 42 may be a hydrocyclone with a base outlet and apex outlet for ejecting either the first or second stream. The first and second streams may be blended or recombined by a static 64 or dynamic mixer. |
