Improvements in coke oven batteries

[Class 51(ii)] In an underjet regenerative coke oven battery in which the lean gas regenerators and the air regenerators are connected to each of the heating wall flues by branches 61, 62 and a common throat 57, the throat is not less than ten inches long, and preferably not less than thirteen inches long, the divergence of the side walls from the top opening is less than ten degrees, and the walls are rounded at the top opening, the radius of curvature being not less than one half an inch. The cooking-chambers, being wider at the coke side of the battery than at the pusher side, it is necessary to arrange for the gas and lean air supply to the flues to increase progressively from the pusher side to the coke side to correspond with the progressively increasing mass of coal to be coked at different cross sections of the coking-chambers. The sides of the throats 57 are therefore arranged at a progressively decreasing divergence from the pusher side to the coke side as shown in dotted lines, the areas of the throat tops being thus progressively increased. A variation of this arrangement is necessitated by the relative large radiation losses from the flues at the pusher and coke ends of the battery, the throat openings being increased at these regions to provide a compensating additional supply of lean gas and air. The invention is described as applied to a battery having transverse rows of flues divided into two groups to operate reversibly with corresponding transverse rows of regenerators, each regenerator row comprising two exterior and one interior regenerators. The flue group at the pusher side comprises two sets of eight reversible flues joined by a horizontal top flue, and the group at the coke side comprises sets of seven and six flues joined by a horizontal top flue. The throats 57 are designed to take account of static pressure variations in the horizontal top flues, and a table of suitable throat dimensions is given. Provision is made for firing the battery with coke oven gas, in which case all the regenerators would be used for preheating combustion air. The usual basement space contains known reversing arrangements and the air supply is through the basement which is connected to the atmosphere by an air channel running the whole length of the battery, beneath the bench on the coke side. A blower may be provided and a filter may be arranged in the channel.
