Processing and storing caption (subtitle) data included in a received video signal, and communicating when it is detected that the video contains caption data corresponding to stored caption data. An advertising server may select and configures advertisements to display. Subtitle information may be closed captions or open captions and may be associated with descriptors relating to the video, which may be a television broadcast signal. Portions of caption information may be input to a hash function to generate a hash code that is included in the stored caption data. Caption matching may include comparing hash codes in video with stored hash codes. Caption data may include next/previous caption frames, TV channel, time stamp and descriptor information. Content optimisation may select content to display on a users webpage, search engine or user interface, such as a smartphone, tablet or smart television, based on the received descriptor(s). For example, when a TV programme shows a particular make/model of car, the encoded programme subtitle information may be used to display a targeted advertisement for the same or competing model of car to a second screen portable electronic device. |
