[Class 140] [Also in Group XV] The surface of an article is lustered by coating the surface with a thermoplastic material in liquid form, drying the coating, covering the coated surface with a flexible and smooth sheet of non-thermoplastic and non-fibrous cellulosic material and then, at a temperature substantially equal to the softening point of the thermoplastic coating exerting pressure on the coated surface through the interposed sheet by means of a polished metallic surface. If desired the cellulosic sheet may be stripped from the article. The lustering of the surface of an article may take place during the shaping of the article from a blank. The thermoplastic material may be an aqueous emulsion of a polyvinyl resin which may be applied by brush or spray gun. The pressure exerted by the polished metallic surface is about 5 to 10 kilograms per square centimetre. The articles lustered may be made from leather, cardboard, artificial leather, lacquered woods, fabrics and metals.
