An image reading apparatus (e.g. photocopier/scanner) comprising a platen or sheet positioning plate 1, an opening-closing unit (e.g. lid/cover/pressing plate) 2, which defines an opening angle relative to the platen, a holding unit to releasably hold the cover in a closed position (first opening angle), a supporting unit to move the lid to open at a second opening angle θ1, a size detection unit to detect sheet size of an original placed on the platen, and a storage unit to save sheet size information, where the size data is reset when the cover is moved to open at a third opening angle (between the first and second opening angles). The size detection may then be triggered either at a fourth opening angle (between the second and third opening angles) or at a fifth opening angle (greater than the second opening angle). |
