[Class 113 (i)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A radar aerial carried by a ship or aircraft, and driven in a scanning motion by a motor is so supported by a gyroscopically-stabilised platform that the aerial is maintained steady despite movement of the craft, while the driving motor moves with the craft. The aerial 24 and radio apparatus 23 are mounted upon a platform 25 which is constrained to take up the same orientation as a stabilised platform 26 with respect to which it may freely rotate by means of a ball-race coupling. Rods 33 and 34 which are driven by servo mechanism from a gyroscopic control unit maintain the plane of the platform 26 steady. The aerial is driven in its scanning motion through worm 27, wormwheel 28 and shaft 29 which is coupled through the gimbal ring 30 to the rotating platform 25. |
